Wow, has it really been a week since I posted that? Anyway...

Following up with my first post on the subject, I'll toss out some questions to those planning on participating. Might as well make this thing work out as well as it can for us, right?

I'll be trying to get the word out about this thing a bit as time goes on. Remember, this won't start until summer, so there's still plenty of time to sign up. That means you, YES YOU READING THIS RIGHT NOW, can come have fun with us!

Okay, so originally I proposed this as a three games/one game per month during the summer deal. But I've been thinking, maybe it would work better if we did fewer games and gave ourselves more time with each one...? I really do want this to be as easy on everyone as possible.

That means we COULD do two games over a six-week span each, instead. That would give us more time per game and make it less troublesome on everyone, but we'd get one less game to play. What do you guys think?

In terms of what games we should play, I really, REALLY want to play Live A Live, so that's one game slot taken. The others are completely up in the air (to an extent), so if anyone has a game or two they think would fit well in this setup, I'm all ears. I might put up everyone's suggestions in a poll for us to vote on when the time comes.

Any other questions anyone else has, please feel free to add them here, too!

I'll probably be making the actual community for this thing soon enough, so you won't have to endure many more entries in my main journal about this... probably. It'd be easier on you to just succumb to temptation and join us anyway

Earthbound is hardly obscure, but I think it would suit group play well.

Earthbound is a wonderful game and honestly, anyone who likes RPGs should play it. Taking the bus instead of having an airship! New Age Retro Hippies! It's also an excellent summer game, at least to me, since I first played it over the summer after it came out.

Also, it's not exactly obscure, as you said, but how many gamers have still yet to play it? Exposing more people to it would be a worthy goal, for sure.

My only concern is that starmen.net does group play thingies of that game... every year, is it? Pretty often, anyway. Of course our community would be different from theirs and all, so it would still be unique. If you guys want to play it, I was looking for an excuse to replay it anyway...

I'd rather play something I wouldn't normally play, honestly. More room for stupid microfanbases that way! But EB would be fun.

We'll see what happens! Especially if we do one game a month, adding in EB would leave plenty of room for other stuff. Otherwise, it's a pretty easy game to get into on your own, if you give yourself the time for it.

Looking forward to your expertly-crafted dissertation of the Wild West portion of Live A Live.

Hey, I'm a total LJ lurker and might as well be a complete stranger to you, but, uh, I'd like to be a part of the community. If you'll have me. :> I love playing old ROMs and old RPGs even more, but at the same time, I haven't played as many as I'd like to! This sounds like a lot of fun.

(If you're wondering where I came from, I friended you when a Star Ocean LJ community reposted your Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Claude screenshots, because they were hysterical.)

I remember you! Don't worry. You know, it's sad, but I should play more Star Ocean 2 PSP. I kind of played the PS1 version to death, but I do want to play the newfangled version. And take more screenshots. Muahaha.

So that's one more in our group, yay! It'll be fun, trust me. *void where prohibited

Heh, me too. I think the reason I haven't bothered to finish SO2 for the PSP after playing SO2 for the PS1 ad nauseum is because the new voice acting was so improved upon. I really miss the weird battle grunts and phrases from the old game. Opera's goose honks and donkey brays come to mind. Without those, it's just not SO2... *tears up*

They have "undub" versions of some PSP games, where the English voices are replaced with the original Japanese voice tracks. I've actually downloaded Star Ocean 2's version and play it with that, so it doesn't seem so bad. But what I really want are the original English voices added in instead... because you're right, part of the magic is lost without them. I WILL TURN YOU INTO A BEEHIVE

If and when you make the community, would it be alright to just make a public post in my personal journal, or would you prefer more "pre-screened" members? I know I have gamer friends on my flist, but I don't really want to bug them personally in case they aren't interested. (My flist is pretty dead to begin with, so I doubt many people would see the entry anyway. Haha.)

Anyway, I really have no suggestions since I suck in terms of any sort of creative thinking. Six-weeks per game would definitely lessen the stress, especially for ridiculously slow gamers like me, though the fewer amount of games that would entail hurts a bit too (variety, spice, life, all that). But if the initial summer run proved to be successful, it wouldn't have to stop there; maybe continue on throughout the busier parts of the year at a slower pace (one game per two months? But I'm getting ahead of myself.)

No real ideas for game suggestions either. 16-bit era I had like, the SNES, and that was about it, so I don't know what other consoles of the time had to offer, and I seriously played maybe three RPGs during the time. (It wasn't really until the very late stages of the Playstation that I played more /shameful RPG 'fan' confession.)

If you're asking about if it's okay to tell other people about this: do whatever you think is best! I don't mind anyone who's interested enough to join to come play with us, and we can deal with problematic people should it come to that. Maybe I'll assign a moderator or two to the community just in case. I personally plan to announce it on Twitter/other places when it's closer to beginning, to drag a few more in with us, so yeah. I trust your judgement!

No matter what format we end up going with, I'm definitely hoping to keep things going throughout the year, although probably at a slower pace. I'd love to get together and play Sweet Home or something near Halloween, among other things. The schedule would be nice and light, for sure. No stress involved!

No shame, no shame! This is part of why I wanted to do this, so that people who have always wanted to experience 16-bit games (and other classic generations) could give themselves a reason to take the plunge. Hopefully by the time we get through this first run, you'll feel a bit more caught-up with what you missed out on back then! ;D

Sweet Home! Man, I've been interested in that ever since I read an article mentioning it on GamesRadar or some place a few years back. I'm a giant chicken when it comes to horror, doesn't matter how ludicrous or fake it seems, but I'm hoping 8-bit thrills and chills will be okay because it really does seem like an interesting game.

It's like an 8-bit Resident Evil, fitting since it inspired the series. Even has the door opening scenes and everything! But it's also kind of like an RPG, so you fight monsters and gain EXP and all that. Very interesting combo.

There's a live-action movie based on it, too! I have yet to see it, though. I think I might after I finish the game.

Here's a screenshot I took from Sweet Home, showing off what gore 8-bit can muster up. The game does get pretty creepy, and I'm not sure if the 8-bit factor makes things easier to bear or that much more horrifying.
