This is a fun thing to do when your significant other watches you play games: randomly pick one out and put it in the console without telling them which one, and watch their reaction based on what it is. So, when I popped in FF8... well, let's just say that I'm really good at sleeping on the couch, so I was prepared for anything.

FF8 is not a bad game, anyway, despite the fact that I feel like I have to "defend" it at times. On the other hand, it's FF8. At this point nobody even cares anymore anyway, but back in 2001 or so people were still ragin'. I'm convinced that either people honestly expected Cloud and co. to star in this one (lol n00bs), or they honestly do not know how to junction/play the game. At all.

Still, she screamed as she saw the logo appear onscreen. It's her fault for never getting much past the White SeeD ship (why does this stop so many people in their tracks?)

Stupid fandom trivia: I've heard that some people thought SeeD was supposed to be pronounced like "CD"... See Dee... get it? This is really bad. I mean... Gardens have... CDs in them? I guess it's the fault of the translators trying to make the word look so cool with its capital D, but still. Too bad there was no "OH CRAP I'VE BEEN SAYING IT WRONG THE WHOLE TIME" moment like Chocobos in FFX. For the record, I've been saying Chocobo right since 1992

My dad saw the opening FMV once and thought the fight between Squall and Seifer was two girls fighting. YOUR JAPANESE CHARACTER DESIGN KNOWLEDGE-FU IS WEAK, FATHER. I can't imagine what he thought about the *HUGGLEZ* part at the end between Squall-ette and Rinoa.

I'm playing this game the exact way you should never play it - drawing magic until you get 100 of everything, among others. This is because I have played this game many times through and gotten everything and seen the story, but I am playing it for another person, and in this case I want to RAPE A NEW HOLE IN THIS GAME AND OUT THE OTHER SIDE. Case in point: Seifer fight at the end of Disc 1? He died in one normal attack from Squall. INTENSE RIVALRY.

I still don't understand how people can complain about drawing because YOU NEVER HAVE TO DRAW A SPELL ONCE if you don't want to, though I'd recommend getting the GFs from bosses at least. Using your GF skills you can get all the spells you could ever hope for from items, and if you refine the cards of GFs and characters you get enough items to upgrade weapons AND get 100 of a spell for every character if you so wish, with leftovers.

Almost everyone I know who played this game did nothing but summon GFs through the whole game. Since the game doesn't penalize you for this (in fact it ups your compatibility with said GF, making it a GOOD thing), it's pretty natural, I guess. But still, how many times can you see one animation before projectile vomiting every time Shiva does her little ice thingie? Plus most people don't abuse Junction like they should, I mean, if I junction 100 Deaths to my ST-Attack, that's way better than any summon. Nearly-100% instant death on monsters > Ifrit's fire thingie.

Also the whole OMG MONSTERS LEVEL UP WITH YOU hate is really... well, I don't know. Do you really want to encounter some 10 HP monster when you're on disc 3, beat it in one hit, and collect no useful EXP or items from it? That's just an annoyance battle, it's pointless. Now, if that same monster actually took a couple of hits before it died and maybe gave you some reason to sit through the battle with it, isn't that a good thing? I don't really grasp the mindset of people who don't want challenge in their RPGs, because THAT'S ALL THEY WERE for a long time. And why bother with awesome spells and skills if you can just normally attack and kill everything easily anyway?

But, I digress. I'm completely disregarding all that to forcibly force my way through the game, and it is pretty fun. Not the way I'd want to play it the first time through, though.

They still spell Quetzalcoatl's name wrong. I'm not sure why I expect the game to somehow correct itself after almost 10 years of existing on the same four CDs. I actually learned how to spell it correctly because of this game (I already knew what it was thanks to Spanish class), so, go video game education! I realize the spelling is due to not having enough spaces, and since most people don't know what the hell Quetzalsomething is, fuck it. I'll admit I kind of missed Ramuh in this game, but he's some old guy and this is some giant... cool thing, so change can be good. He came back in FF9 anyway, but I can't begin to tell you the amount of "I've only played FF7" types who actually had the gall to bitch about it.

By the way, I have nothing against 7ups - those who started out playing FF7. I actually just made up that term, go ahead and use it. Like booyaka. Speaking of which, Selphie's retarded little Lagunawank website is still awesome.

Quistis is still surface-of-the-sun hot and I would take whatever class she was teaching. Calculus? Why yes I fucking love calculus. Now, WHY they decided her normal look would not only drop the glasses but also the uniform is beyond me. Her normal outfit is okay but I'm confused about the pants-underneath-dress deal going on. If they ever remade this game, letting the characters wear alternate outfits would be awesome. Thinking about it, everyone has some other outfit they wear in the game. Squall has multiple uniforms as do Zell, Quistis and Selphie, Rinoa's got the dress, and Irvine... well okay, I didn't think this all the way through.

This is my "what do I think of them" chart for this playthrough so far:

Squall: Neutral. He's decent-looking although I don't have any idea what's going on with the back of his hair, he's angsty and thinks more of his dialog than saying it, he actually does say "whatever" a lot, but I've noticed he at least TRIES to have a little compassion when he has to, just to get past the rough spots so he can go back to thinking really hard about disagreeing with you. I haven't gotten to the infamous disc 3 shenanigans yet, though, I can't wait.

Quistis: Neutral, because my opinion of her can't get any higher on the scale. She's obviously got a crush on Squall pretty badly, and she yells at Rinoa a lot. And she has some sick burns for Seifer when she gets the chance. I'm thinking she mostly doesn't want anyone else to have Squall or is jealous of anyone who appears closer to him than she is. (Rinoa and Seifer would fall into this category, and conveniently she bitches at them the most) I'm sure there's fanfic/doujinshi material involving her and Squall and whips in some stereotypical fashion, but seriously, could anyone complain about that? The mere thought of Squall being abused to the point of getting MORE scars should appeal to anyone who has played this game at least once.

Zell: -5? Only because I am forever scarred by seeing his face EVERYWHERE at KAWAII ART ZONE and his intro FMV basically looked like a commercial for it. Also, he keeps randomly practicing his... whateverthehell martial arts in the corner while everyone else has a strategy meeting. Oh, and he screws everything up. Seeing him go all "nyoro~n" whenever someone busts out the CHICKEN-WUSS burn is amusing, though. Also HOT DAWGS makes him seem even gayer, although it was "bread" in the Japanese version, which is a little less gay, unless it's baguettes or something, then it's almost equal.

Selphie: +10, she seems a lot cuter to me this time around. I love how she trains Squall on all her little quirks so that he just ends up becoming her bitch rather than face her wrath. Also, NUNCHUCKS. I don't know how this game got released in Europe because Nunchucks are like the devil over there or something. But yeah, her dress is short but she doesn't care and busts out some whoopass anyway and her victory pose is all sassy and, well, she rules. Her limit break is a small microcosm of the dangers of gambling.

Rinoa: +3. I don't like the forced romance between her and Squall but I haven't gotten to that part yet :DDD Also she's pretty whiney herself, but gets her way every time and abuses that "contract" stuff to the last drop. Plus she has her own luxury princess suite in the Forest Owl's train where she takes naps at her leisure, which is badass in a girly kind of way. I keep forgetting she has a dog, I'm not limit breaking much this game. She looks really good in that dress, too.

Irvine: PURPLE OUT OF 500. No seriously other than being the OVERCOMPENSATING FLIRTY GUY and the "snipers have feelings too" speech, he has done nothing so far. And I can't remember if he does much of anything afterwards. He's just kind of there. I don't like the obvious Irvine/Selphie stuff either because she's too good for him and he'll just cheat on her with Shiva or something.

Bonus: Edea: MILF out of 10. Yeah she's hot and I don't think I realized this until now. All that freaky makeup just kind of works for her. She's like the final evolved form of the gothy girls from your highschool and manages to get SEIFER to calm down long enough to become her puppy, among other things. She also KILLS THE PRESIDENT (hello, FBI) in front of a crowd of people and has a rockin' parade afterwards.

So now I'm at the end of Disc 1. Ahh, changing discs, how I don't miss thee. Although if they ever remake this game (I've said that twice now...) and it was all on one huge Blu-ray disc or something, it'd be weird to not have the game broken up into discs like this. You usually change discs after some important moment in the game and it also gives you a rough estimate of how far into the game you are, as long as you always remember that the last disc consists of nothing but the final dungeon + ending FMVs.

Coming soon: more FF8! Whenever I decide to play more of it. I also beat MGS2 somehow so I'm hoping I can play MGS3 soon, although I want to continue Snake Tales and VR TROOPERS too.

This is what I was wondering. I've heard of "ChoCOBo" before, but how can you mangle a word that's pretty much pronounced as you'd normally read it? Still, get enough people with internet access to play a popular game and this kind of thing happens.

I'm lucky that Spanish pronunciation is pretty similar to Japanese so I've avoided all that AND got to say a bunch of "told-you-sos" in the process.

I still pronounce Tidus as "tide-us" instead of "tee-dus" because nobody believes me when I say that's how it's supposed to be, plus, fuck Tidus.
