Essentially, just send letters back and forth with people you have friend codes of. It sounds kind of lame, but you need to send a certain number of messages to at least one other person to unlock a bonus dungeon and the Onion Knight job class, so it has its uses.

It's basically an online version of the Mognet system in FF9. You can also send messages to characters in the game, which unlocks other various things.

7, apparently. You can send all seven to the same person, but you need at least one friend code for that. If you get the game I can help you out!

7 isn't too bad - knowing FF minigames, I was fearing something involving twenty different people!
I don't have a DS yet, although now I'm seriously thinking about it. Maybe for Christmas.
