slimequest: (WAHT)
So I beat Fire Emblem last night. A good thing, right? Well of course. I get to see how Eliwood and Lyn end up. Now I'm free to read up on secrets and stuff like that without being spoiled. First stop, GameFAQS for the things I missed in the game, etc.

Now, GameFAQs as everyone knows is a wonderful source on game information in the form of FAQs. Everyone also knows the message boards are the stinky, hairy armpit of the gaming world. The bottom of the barrel. The idiocy level is lethal. (well, there ARE exceptions like the FFT board, but even then I usually don't bother)

Yet, sometimes they discuss game info not easily seen in the FAQs, so I pay them a visit. Maybe there's something useful I can learn?

No. In fact, I now feel the urge to bang my head on a table. Many, many times in a row.

The beauty of Fire Emblem is that you get to CHOOSE which characters interact and "couple-up" if you see fit. If you think some girl and some guy should "get to know each other", it isn't any more correct than another couple. There ARE no "canon" couples except for a few of the minor characters who already are married, have someone, etc, but a majority do not. Including the main characters.

So when I see the topic called something like "what couples do YOU think are the official ones?", I know this must be trouble. It isn't about being official, it's about choice, hello? This is a KICKASS system because I can see whichever two people I want together and nobody can tell me it's any more "official" than the next.

I mean I have enough trouble with so-called canon couples in other games and how I like some alternative coupling.

So anyway, this thread pissed me off. Why? Because the pairings all seemed to say

ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN
ELIWOOD/NINIAN

..as if this was a set in stone pairing that cannot be questioned. It was nearly universal that the posters chose this.

Well,

for one thing, in MY playthrough, it was, shall we say, pretty clear-cut that those two didn't and couldn't get together. Oh sure, she loves him. And he cares for her... AS A SISTER. So it's a one-sided thing, at least with my scenario.

Eliwood/Lyn works so much better in so many ways that it's not even funny, IMO. One or two people in the thread agreed with that (not that I ever post in these things) but it didn't seem like these people thought there was a choice.

But I don't hate Ninian, as sadly, I have learned some do. She's cute, and I like her. But not with Eliwood. No need to hate.

However, why would you take the one thing that should be in every other RPG-type game (getting to choose the couples) and ruin it completely by suggesting one pairing is more "right" than another? GAWD.

Every single fandom sucks. EVERY ONE. They ruin whatever they're trying to be "fans" of.

And I won't even get into the gay couplings suggested in that thread. And the posters acted as if of COURSE we should consider these couplings!!!1 Thank god there's no actual yaoi couplings in the game, just friendships between people that can develop.

Every single person who likes yaoi needs to be hit with a cement truck. Twice. No exceptions. Yaoi is like a fandom but somehow gone even MORE wrong and any logic that may have been left has since been flushed down the toilet.

*pants* My rant is over. To sum up, the support-relationship thing in FE is the best thing ever in RPGs because it lets you choose what characters get together with whatever ones you want, so FINALLY we're not stuck with canon couples that we don't like. But idiot "fans" of the game make me want to hurt things. And they should die.
