slimequest: (Dragons are over-rated)

Since I remembered how to do this from the NES version, and it also works well on the DS version, here's a way to get a bunch of cash really easily in chapter 3 of DQ4 which I thought I'd share with my DQ buddies.

First of all, when working at the weapon store, make sure someone comes buy and sells you a Cautery Sword. After they do, don't sell it to anyone! It's okay if you already did, though, just work there long enough for someone to sell you another.

Now, go on with the rest of your business until you get your own shop. If you can't scrape up the cash for it, make sure you've gotten the silver statue and sold it to the rich guy in town. Any of the rest of the cash you can get by selling armor to the guy who really wants to buy armor from you in the castle.

Now, you'll need to get together some more money. Give your wife any and all pieces of equipment you find and she'll sell them for a huge profit somehow. Random monsters in this chapter will drop things like steel broadswords which sell for 3000, for example. Once you have enough money, go back to Lakanaba and buy several Cautery Swords from the weapon shop. Yes, you will miraculously be able to buy as many as you want despite the fact that someone only sold you one. Take these back to your wife and she'll sell them for an even greater profit. Basically, you make cash, buy Cautery Swords, sell them for even more cash, and repeat. Make sure to give one to Torneko to equip, as it's his best weapon in this chapter. In order to speed things up, exit Torneko's shop and reenter, and then speak with his wife behind the counter to sleep for the day. Do this until she sells everything in stock, then repeat.

Fulfill the king's request of outfitting his troops (the swords drop easily from random slimes, the armor also drops but you can even buy it from the armor shop in town) and he'll give you 60,000 gold. Don't give this to the guy in the tunnel yet! Once you do that, after a couple of days the tunnel will be completed and you won't be able to give things to your wife to sell. Instead, invest all that money in Cautery Swords (you can buy packs of nine at a time) and give them all to your wife to sell.

I ended up making about 200,000 gold before deciding that was enough, but you can take this as far as you want it to. Once you're ready to finish up the chapter, pay off the old guy in the tunnel and spend all the rest of your money buying as many Cautery Swords as you can. (Torneko's gold does NOT carry over, only equipment and items). When you meet up with Torneko again, you can pass around the swords to whoever can equip them and sell the rest for a nice boost in cash. And that's that!

Now for some more hot Maya and Meena action in DQ4 <3

Thank you ever so much! I'll make sure and put that to good use when I get to that point.

Thanks for the tip! 200k is a fair amount of gold at that portion of the game. :D

You end up making back almost the full amount when you sell all those swords, but it's still a nice bit of cash to help you along. Especially if you plan to outfit and use all the characters.

I got the game today! After discovering that the game allows me to control all characters (as opposed to what happened in the original) I went right out and bought it.

I also shared your advice with an RPG forum I frequent; it was met with some fanfare (see here (http://rpgland.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=78&start=1906)). I hope you don't mind.

Yeah, it's great that you get to actually manually control all your party members in this version. The original felt flawed by that limitation.

Oh, and that's fine. Spread the wealth! It's not like I made it up myself anyway, it's just a trick from the NES version that luckily still works.

Here, have some more icon! <3

Yeah, it has way too many good games now to pass up on. Plus, so many colors to choose from!

That icon is cute, although it does remind me that I'm still pissed off because my copy of DQ8 glitched before I could get into the postgame and I spent 120+ hours on this game.

If you're asking, 60+ hours before I decided to restart for better skills and 60+ hours to finish the game. ;_;

Ouch D:

The postgame stuff is kind of interesting but in your case I might just consider passing it up xD; Especially after what you've gone through.

I did, because I'll cry forever if my PS2 dies before I finish playing at least Persona 4 and Mana Khemia 2.

It's like a cruel, cruel blow to my pitiful soul. Such a pity, such a pity...

Oh, this is awesome! I'll be making a note of it, for when the time comes.

Question: I never played DQ4, save for attempting the ROM in Japanese. What is the deal with the chapters? I've completed the first one, and I believe there are five? Are they all that short? I mean, am I 1/5th of the way through the game now, or is there more after the fifth chapter, or what?

Consider the first four chapters to be warm-ups, and the REAL game begins in chapter 5. It's significantly longer than the others ;D Ragnar's in particular is short, just to get your feet wet. So don't worry!

Oh, good. I was a little worried that this was an 8-hour game, based on Ragnar's chapter!
