For whatever reason I've been playing Warcraft III on my computer recently. I am totally a console person and never even bother giving "PC" games (which is ironic because I'm playing this on my Mac.. yes, they can play games) a second thought. But I've always liked this series specificially. Hopefully my youngest brother will install his copy so I can lower his self esteem online.
And yes, I realize this game is.. kind of old, I suppose. I'm just now getting into it. It's nice to play a game on the computer that isn't a ROM sometimes. Runs pretty well on my Mac Mini.
Sadly I've probably been tainted by all my years of playing Japanese RPGs and the like, since I'm kind of wishing this game had a more anime-ish look to it. I hardly play any games with Western style art, so it always takes getting used to. I've probably never forgiven all the awful American box art of early NES/SNES days subconciously.
Other than that I've been a lazyass in trying to get back into all those unbeated/unplayed games. I've mostly been trying to finish off Romancing SaGa with less than spectacular results. Ah well, it's to be expected in SaGa. It's why I love you ~♥. But I want to try out playing as some of the other characters now for a change, so die mister last boss.
I did manage to play Grandia III for about an hour yesterday and make.. 25 minutes worth of progress? I did advance further a little but then got clobbered by giant statue guys who like to shoot laser beams at me. Twice in a row. So basically no one survives. I'll have to redo part of that dungeon now. Those kinds of situations always make it hard when you're trying to get back into a game you've left for a while. Oh well, SOMEHOW I WILL GO ON~~~!
In closing, I've been getting these gaming magazines (I think it's official Playstation magazine and Electronic Gaming Monthly?) for free for whatever reason lately. They suck. The only good gaming mag ever was Nintendo Power back when all you needed to play was on Nintendo. Before it had ads and junk, too.
Anyway, all these magazines give Suikoden V some pretty mediocre scores. Of course online all I've seen is positive reviews. The magazines kept saying how outdated the battle system and the game overall was and how Suikoden needs a kick in the pants and try something new.
Haha, last time I checked that was called Suikoden IV (or III for that matter) and the fandom hates them both to varying degrees. Nevermind that Suikoden III consistently got better scores and reviews than the first two at most sites (for whatever that's worth). I think they don't realize that Suiko5 was a game for the fans most of all, and what the fans want is as close to Suikoden II as humanly possible. The only thing they couldn't do in this day and age is make it 2D, although that would've made a bunch of Suikoden fans cream their pants. But, as I said, these magazines suck and are the same people who give Kingdom Hearts II 20 out of 10 perfect game!!11 scores, so, there you go.
Actually, I've been meaning to play through KH again and force
krile to watch and then sometime after get KH2. I really have nothing against the game itself (except all the 12 year olds who think it's so HARDCORE MICKEY IS A NINJA) but I cannot possibly bring myself to play a game that so many people are masturbating to at once. Once it all calms down, then maybe. The first one was kind of fun, at least. I had the best Gummi ships ever.

Date: 2006-05-05 07:38 am (UTC)I can't stand that style. I never could -- even before I ever bothered playing Japanese RPGs. It always seemed too Dungeons and Dragons or whatever, and I can't stand that shit.
SaGa
Goddamn right. I hate it when people don't capitalize the G.
Grandia III
I don't see how you can stomach a game that's made up of every anime and videogame cliché known to man. The music is disappointing, too -- Noriyuki Iwadare needs to take a long vacation.
and what the fans want is as close to Suikoden II as humanly possible.
Actually, I'd be more contenet with "as close to Suikoden 1 as humanly possible." -- I didn't like what I played of Suikoden 2. That, and at least Ted didn't constantly make passes at Tir. Jesus christ. Males play these games, too, Konami.
Kingdom Hearts II 20 out of 10 perfect game!!11
The Kingdom Hearts series is an abomination in the eyes of your deity. Of course, anything that Nomura has any connection with is, as well.

Date: 2006-05-05 06:58 pm (UTC)Also yes: Western art all looks like Conan the Barbarian to me. They couldn't draw an attractive woman to save their life.
As for Grandia III, well, I'm a big fan of the series. The first one especially. The battle system is consistently good in the series and I always find myself interested enough to fight enemies, which is a rarity.
The story has its moments but otherwise I'm not TOO impressed. The characters themselves are more interesting than what's going on in the story as a whole. Of course, I think that's true for Grandia as a whole.
I'll also have to say that I've enjoyed much of the music in the game so far as well, Attack with Conviction!! (aka first battle theme) I'm in love with. Difficult to say at this point whether the OST stands up to the other Grandia games as a whole. I'm just glad Iwadare decided to do Grandia III's music as opposed to Lunar: Dragon Song's.
In regards to Suikoden II.. honestly, I kind of lump I and II together far too often. Suikoden I can stand on its own but II relies very heavily on characters and loose plot ends from the first game, so I see it as more of an extension of the first.
Regardless, most fans point to that as what they consider to be the series' best, so I'm just commenting on that ;D Of course I disagree, but that's nothing new.

I liked the second one. Ryudo was an asshole, which made it funny. And the Millenia/Elena conflict was amusing, as well. I never got around to playing Grandia 1 because I couldn't get the sound to emulate perfectly on ePSXe -- and I dislike playing PSX games on my console as I have to constantly clear up memory card space.

I don't think he'll ever match his work on Lunar. I've not heard the majority of the original Grandia OST. "Come on, Let's Travel" from Grandia 2 is awesome.
