GET IT ON THE SCREEN
It seems like I've neglected this journal! But actually I haven't had anything terribly interesting to post about. (Not that I ever do anyway hurf durf)
Let's see... Spring Break was pretty good, basically a combination of resting at home with my new HDTV/surround sound combo and doing various things in the local area. I'm pretty easy to please. It was nice to have an actual day off or two, since I actually don't have anything like that currently. (It's either work, school, or work 'n school)
It's a 52" LCD HDTV and combined with 5.1 surround sound, it's definitely the biggest "upgrade" gaming-wise that I've ever gotten. Most of my early gaming was done with the RF adapter through the cable input of the TV with mono sound. I can remember getting a decent new TV around 1998 or so which had the red/white/yellow RCA inputs (!) and stereo speakers (!!), which at the time was the most awesome thing ever. I remember it being 1998/1999 because the first game I played on this new beauty was Xenogears xD
But, yeah... it always sucked up until that point to have to switch every game to "mono" in the settings and feeling all inadequate and stuff. Now, not only can I crank it up to 1080p, but I can take advantage of the "surround" setting in the audio options :D I've had way too much fun using Star Ocean 4's speaker setup and having the characters shout random things around the room.
Speaking of which, I've basically been juggling Final Fantasy XIII and Star Ocean 4 back and forth. I feel kind of guilty putting off FINAL FANTASY FREAKING THIRTEEN but Star Ocean 4 has really surprised me, it's basically the Star Ocean game I've always wanted, more or less. Oh, and I'm talking about the PS3 version, you know, with actual ANIME PORTRAITS that isn't trying to appeal to the "Western market" by making itself uglier and denying what it really is, a JRPG. God, I hate that trend this generation. Anyway...
Instead of "OOPS STUCK ON AN UNDERDEVELOPED PLANET AGAIN! LOL", you actually GET TO FLY ON YOUR SPACESHIP TO STRANGE NEW WORLDS and most of your party is "aware" of other planets existing. I mean SO1 and SO2 get free passes by me because SO1 was always meant to be a medieval-style RPG with a scifi wrapping to it, and SO2 is just plain awesome so whatever. SO3, on the other hand... I seriously thought that Fate's little excursion to Vanguard III was kind of an homage to this stuff in past Star Ocean games and after his short stay that would be it... BUT NOPE 5 SECONDS LATER YOU'RE SHOT DOWN ONTO ANOTHER ONE! God, I hate all of Elicoor II, and that's 3/4ths of the game.
Anyway, what I've always wanted since age 12 or so is basically "Star Trek the JRPG" and SO4 is basically that, so I'm happy as hell. Plus all the characters and their interactions are interesting/amusing which is a big plus in any game. Oh yeah, and it being a Star Ocean game, it has awesome Motoi Sakuraba music which sounds great on my new speakers.
There's other stuff but I don't want to cram it all into one post, it took enough effort to write this one. I think I'm getting LJ-lazy or something, I've even slacked off on Twitter, and that takes a REAL brand of lazy >_>;

Star Trek The JRPG sounds like pure liquid awesome. Do you get to actually pull a Captain Kirk and ruin primitive civilisations by showing them all their beliefs are lies?

Well it's either landing on an underdeveloped planet and not even giving a shit that they can see your spaceship, or TRYING to be a goody-two-shoes and not interfering but eventually going "fuck it" and killing some badguys to save the day. It's set in a more "unruly" ST:TOS-type era so you can get away with that stuff, so it's more fun.
But yeah, Elicoor was awful. I'm convinced, between Nel and Albel, that the entire planet is gay, in the literal and pejorative sense. Then after 3942390 gameplay hours of torture, Maria beams down with her UN TSS UN TSS music and saves you and you can finally get to the STAR part of Star Ocean. Except oops you need to return to Elicoor to finish off the last boss! BOOYA.
Also that hotel scene with Albel and Fayt in SO3 is undiluted fangirl fodder and it's almost embarrassing to watch.

YES.

As a massive fangirl who ships everything I can officially say that scene is stupid. The best subtext is subtext that arises naturally out of the dynamics between the characters - Fayt/Albel was just so FORCED and auuuugh I hate it and I hate him.

SO3 is an anthropological yaoi study.
