But, my obsessive collection~!

So yeah, E3, lots of gaming news, etc. Way too many enticing games coming out in the next year or so.

Two things:

1. The PSP Go!(!!!!!!!?) looks... kinda interesting, from a "I wonder how it feels to play one" standpoint. But the idea of a UMD-less PSP isn't really anything new to those of us cool kids with custom firmware. At least this gives everyone the opportunity to play PSP games with MUCH faster loading times than reading it from a UMD.

Still, the idea of getting rid of physical media in exchange for digital downloads is a bit... unsettling to me. It's probably the wave of the future and it does have a lot of nice uses, but I like to have a box and disc/cart and physical instruction manual to keep around. It's the same reason why roms don't feel "real" to me or have the same worth as actual games. It'd also be odd to have entire generations of games piled up in my house somewhere but then they all of a sudden drop off at some point because they stop selling games in boxes.

For a handheld gaming system especially, digital downloads make a lot of sense, but still, I'd like a choice in the matter if possible. I have bought download-only games (Pixeljunk Monsters) and enjoyed them probably about as much as I would have if they were on a disc, because in the end it's the games themselves that matter the most... b... but still! At least this seems to be a handheld-specific thing for now.

UMD, you might be dumb and slow and stuff, but I always thought you were kinda cute.

2. Yeah there are way too many good games that are going to come out. But can anyone else back me up on the fact that the Golden Sun series was just... well, nothing to write home about? Seems there's a sect of GS cultists around and I'm sure there's a ritualized orgy going on about now, but the first game was just ehhh despite being pretty for an early GBA game, so I never played the second.

P.S.: Square-Enix, I love you baby, but you're dumb as fuck for making another MMORPG a numbered Final Fantasy game because it makes no sense to, and I'll likely play it for 2 weeks and throw it away unless it's somehow different from every MMORPG ever. Also, you can't ever "beat" that kind of game so now there's two holes in the series like that... and... well, that's lame, wouldn't you agree?

Well, I meant "ok no more real games you have to download them" for systems that used to have actual discs or whatever.

Wiiware and the PSN games are sort of "probably nobody would buy them if they were on a disc or something" games... then again I'd buy most of the good ones if they were. But I know the development costs go way down if you don't have to put boxes in stores, so it's a safer bet.

I guess what I mean is, you don't see "real" PS3 games for download-only, probably because it would take 27 months to download. For now!

Also the removal of the actual disc drive thingie is harsh compared to offering both. I like the idea of being able to download a game instead of going to a store if I'm lazy, but the choice is good to have.

ohhhh I see what you're saying. Well yeah, I agree.

Wait wait wait....I've must've really not read the E3 news right (or didn't pay enough attention)

They're going MMORPG? The series is endless as it is and well an mmorpg >_>; I dunno...it really makes no sense. Sounds like they're jumping to another market they're better off not competing in. :x and for that matter wasn't there previously some other FF online game?

Yeah, FF11 was an online game, which is still going strong apparently, so I'm kind of confused where they're going with this. Guess we'll have to see? Oh well, FF13 is more "normal" so that's all I care about xD

I remember Golden Sun! How the first game finished right at the point where other games of its type would have started its major rally? It was a neat idea, and it'll sell well, but I'm... kind of with you on this one.

I don't know how "lame" it is to suggest that there are two "holes" in the Final Fantasy franchise. Never mind the fact that the games truly do have defeatable storylines that are definitely on par with other Final Fantasy games and everything on the sides could just be seen as additional playability? None of the games really had a respectable numbering system anyways. The remarkable difference in the way the games approached things starting with 7 certainly left room for wonder. That said, you probably won't "play it for two weeks and then throw it away" - if it's like the first one, you'll either quite it three days in out of sheer frustration, or you'll stick around for a couple of months if not longer. Personally, I'm excited, because I'm hoping S-E learns from the mistakes they made with XI as well as the feedback they've gotten from their player base. I'm taking the "wait and see" approach.

I don't think any "cliffhanger" games have ever really delivered on the second or third parts to them. It's basically torturing your audience on purpose, and even the most BDSM-loving gamers hate it, I'm sure.

Anyway, it just struck me as odd that XI was even a numbered FF to begin with, which goes along with my beef of XIV's numbering. It's just SO different that I think a distinction needs to be made. The amount of time needed to invest in it to get any kind of progress/storyline made, plus the fact that after a point you HAD to have a party to progress, among other reasons.

The other thing is, FFXI will eventually, one day, go offline (probably), meaning I won't be able to pick it up off the shelf and play it as I would any of the other games in the series. I'm sure the name "Final Fantasy Online" or something like that was available, and after XII came out it seems kind of odd that the "previous" game would still be getting updates and expansions. Not so much if the game made itself separate from the main series.

I can't comment on the storyline of XI much since I barely got any of it in my 2 1/2 months of off-and-on playing of it. IS there actually an "end" with credits and storyline resolution and stuff? If so I stand corrected, but... still, I have no idea how much time you'd have to invest in order to get that far. Compared to a 50-ish hour standard RPG, I just can't see how many average RPG/FF fans would ever get that far, which is another reason why I think it should've not been numbered. The amount of people who will say "yeah I played and beat them all except that online one" is probably pretty significant.

Aaaaanway... I'm willing to give XIV a chance, for sure. For all I know it's completely different from XI, and perhaps most importantly (to me), it might have an offline mode, so that one COULD play it as they would the other FF games. My estimate of how long I'll give it a shot might be off, but I do want to give it a fair chance, since I have no desire for it to suck/fail/not impress me, at all. But assuming it's a completely online FF, to me it'll end up making all the same "mistakes" (to me, a person who doesn't really like MMORPGs and would prefer it to not be numbered either out of stubbornness or OCD or something) as XI, which is why I'm bitching xD

I don't get the 2nd MMORPG thing at all. Nor do I understand the sequels, either, and this is from someone who has DC and X-2 (although we are returning DC because it sucks -- even worse than X-2. Yeah I said it.). What is going on in FF world?!

Well, I think they're just a little too successful now, unfortunately. And I think S-E is trying way too hard to milk what works (FF7 and FF10, among others) to death instead of just making new, original games.

It is kind of bothersome with all the sequels and remakes and crap, but some of them do end up being kinda good. From what I've played of Crisis Core FF7 it's decent at least, and I really can't knock them for making a sequel to Final Fantasy IV (since I dreamed of this since I was like, 12), but at least there are new games on the horizon.

Still, I don't even have enough time to play all the "regular" games I have lying around, so MMORPGs, especially TWO going on at the same time, kind of lose me.
