30 Days of Games Meme PART 3

30 Days of Video Games Day Three: A game that makes you really happy

This is a tough one (explaining why it's taken me this long to get to part three...) because "happy" can mean so many different things. The game that I chose made me happy simply due to the fact that it was released at all, plus it made me happy while I was playing it, and the ending was a happy one as well:

Let's think back to when DQVIII was released. I had been drooling over screenshots from the Japanese version since forever, and I wasn't sure if it was ever going to be released out here. As it turns out, not only was it being released in North American and Europe, but it was the beginning of Square-Enix's push to popularize this series in the West. Gamestop gave out demo discs and the game itself came with a demo of FFXII to entice people to give it a chance.

Being the ever-present DQ fan that I am, of course, I was ecstatic at all this. It had been a while since we'd gotten a new DQ game out here, plus this game looked absolutely gorgeous. I was a bit iffy about the cosmetic changes the English version was getting, but the orchestral OST combined with the new voice acting were great additions to the game.

So, not only was I getting to play a spiffy new Dragon Quest game (with the proper title, this time around), but as it turned, out [livejournal.com profile] krile took a bit of an interest, as well. I was kind of expecting it to be my personal game to fanboy over and didn't expect her to care about it much at all, but she enjoyed watching me play and took a shining to the characters. Even if some of this interest ended up being in the sense of completely unexpected DQ yaoi pairings (seriously, I didn't even think it existed until then), it was nice to share something I liked with her. Since then, she's become interested in the series overall and has played a few of the games (she just beat DQIX, woo~), so this is also a sense of DQVIII making me "happy" by opening up these opportunities.

Let's not forget the game itself, though. I can't tell you how excited I was to squish some slimes in stunning 3D. DQ games had always been more simplistic, graphics-wise, than most other RPGs, but it was nice to indulge for once. The voice acting really added a lot of character to... the characters, as well, with Yangus' cockney accent being a personal favorite of mine. I enjoyed the story and especially liked the ending, which just left me in one of those "feel-good" kind of moods afterwards. Most RPGs either have depressing, vague, or otherwise unsatisfying endings in my opinion, so it was a nice treat to actually enjoy an ending for once.

This game rekindled my love for Dragon Quest all over again, and it's led to the DS Zenithia series (4-6, still waiting on 6, though) coming out here as well as the huge marketing push with 9 being released recently. A game from a beloved series of mine being released, which sparks a new interest from not only my loved one but in my part of the world? Yeah, that'll make me happy, all right.

I want 6 in a bad way, partly because of the empty slots in my game case between 5 and 9. Can I sue S-E for aggravating my OCD?

I think it's worth a shot. You could always drop the lawsuit halfway through once 6 comes out, and then it's a win-win situation! (minus legal fees)
